The 2022 Defence Major Project report has been released, detailing progress on the 12 significant capability projects currently in delivery.
Presenting to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee on 1 June, Deputy Secretary of Defence Capability Sarah Minson said the report highlighted that the Ministry of Defence and the New Zealand Defence Force continue to oversee and manage a significant investment by the Government in Defence.
“The 2022 Report highlights that while delivery times are under pressure, we continue to make good progress on the delivery of major Defence projects totalling $5.6 billion.
“While a number of projects are experiencing schedule delays, all are forecasting to deliver the agreed quality and scope within their Cabinet-approved budgets.”
Highlights in the report include:
-
the commencement in early 2022 of the construction of the first NZ P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and the delivery of the finished aircraft to Base Ohakea in December 2022;
-
the successful completion of HMNZS Aotearoa’s first re-supply mission to McMurdo Sound to deliver bulk liquid and solid cargo as part of the Government’s contribution to Antarctica New Zealand operations and the Joint Logistics Pool.
-
deployment of HMNZS Manawanui to the Southwest Pacific as part of Operation MAHI TAHI 22. Activities included responding to a request from the Government of Tonga through Land Information New Zealand to undertake a hydrographic survey of the Tongatapu outer reef.
